Kathryn, When Maria first
came to the Kathryn Barnett School of Dance, we did not know anything
about dance other than her classmates were ‘taking ballet’. For
eight years at The Studio, Maria studied ballet, jazz, and tap with you.
This year as a freshman in high school, Maria balanced her college-bound
goals with new activities that left little time for dance class but not an
absence of dance. You helped set in motion her confidence to take a
large dance role in the school performance of “42nd Street”. More
significantly, though, you helped her learn that she is an instrument of
her own decisions and that with patience, practice, respect, and
perseverance, she can continue to raise the ‘barre’ to achieve her goals
while knowing that it is in caring for others that we grow in ourselves.
