Kathryn
Barnett joined Leah Mauer, the original owner of the dance studio, in the
late seventies, and purchased what was to become KBSD from her mentor in
1983. Dance has grown and changed by leaps and bounds since then. With
ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary lyrical, musical theater, and pointe, and
most recently Zumba and children's
yoga, all programs at KBSD are geared to age, ability, and experience with
teachers constantly upgrading the quality of instruction by continuing
their own dance education. In addition to studio classes, the Kathryn
Barnett School of dance provides an outreach program including dance,
yoga, and movement classes at The Red Bank Charter School
and FirstFriends Nursery school.
In
November 2008, The Barnett Traveling Troupe performed at Walt Disney World
for the third time in KBSD history. This select group of performers
competes in two dance competitions per year, as well as in several
community service and charity performances. They perform over 40 hours of
volunteer service a season through
Holiday Express, senior citizens events, and other performances within the
community. They have performed on the Today Show, at the Meadowlands (For
Our Heroes Concert with Bruce Springsteen), the Stone Pony in Asbury Park,
and at half time at the 76er's games.
Sportsmanship Awards that have been presented to the Studio celebrates
students that display respect, courtesy, and support for other studios
throughout the competition. For many years, The Kathryn Barnett School
of Dance in Red Bank NJ has been the proud recipient of the Sportsmanship
Award at the Starpower Regional and Starbound Regional competition, among
others.
